The night sky changes with the seasons, and so does our Skywatch program. This LIVE traditional star talk shows the current night sky, constellation lore, and current astronomical events.

Doors open at 7:30 pm
Admission is free, no reservations are required.

Legends of the Night Sky: Perseus & Andromeda

Children and adults will enjoy this animated show where Aesop the owl leads you on a light-hearted journey as you look at the Greek mythology associated with some of our constellations. This includes stories behind the mighty warrior Perseus, beautiful princess Andromeda, Cetus the terrible sea monster.

Doors open at 1:30 pm
Admission is free, no reservations are required.

STARS: October 7 & 8 at 8:00 pm
STARS focuses on the lives of the stars, how they are born, how they die, and how human understanding of the stars has changed over time.

Nightlights:  October 14 & 15, 21 & 22, 28 & 29 at 8:00 pm
The Ward Beecher Planetarium’s spooky and spectacular annual Halloween spectacular has been going strong since 1974! This year, there are new songs and old favorites.  Come in costume!  Great for all ages, although younger visitors might be scared of the loud music and dark.

The Halloween Show:  October 15, 22, 29 at 2:00 pm 
A friend, Jack O’Lantern, shows Holly how to use the stars to find her way around the night sky.  The history and traditions of Halloween are presented in a fun, non-scary style, making this show ideal for all ages.

  • Due to a major construction project on Lincoln Ave, the road is closed and temporary crossing areas are rocky with obstructions. 
  • The handicapped lot between Jones Hall and Ward Beecher is also closed.
    • Visitor parking on the street, will be limited to
      • Phelps St. between Lincoln and Wood St.(east side of the Williamson Business School)
      • Hazel St. between Rayen and Wood (west side of the Williamson Business School)
      • Wood Street between Wick and Fifth (south side of the Williamson Business School)
  • Parking will also be available in the Wick Ave. parking deck (M1) for a fee of $5.00, or free with a YSU parking permit.
    • Visitors should park on the 4th floor of the deck and use the pedestrian bridge to campus. 
    • From the campus end of the pedestrian bridge, turn follow the sidewalk to the left as you pass the library to the Ward Beecher Planetarium.
    • This route will be the easiest for wheelchair accessibility.

Show Notes:
  • Please give yourself plenty of time, as pedestrian zones may change from time to time.
  • Once the show has started, latecomers will not be admitted.
  • All shows are free and open to the public (donations are always appreciated).
  • No reservations are needed - doors open 30 minutes prior to show time.  First come, first seated!
  • The planetarium is very dark and sound travels very well in the room, the noise level may not be appropriate for everyone.
  • Parents should use their own judgment based on the program descriptions and knowledge of their child.
